Rapid City, SD
The biggest city in western South Dakota, and the base for the whole region.
Rapid City is where most visitors fly in, sleep and set out from, and Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Deadwood and the Badlands are each about an hour away or less. Downtown has life-size bronze statues of the presidents on its street corners, and the concrete dinosaurs of Dinosaur Park have looked down on the city from Skyline Drive since the 1930s. Give it a day of its own before you head out, because it's easy to rush through.
