Box Elder, SD
Rapid City's neighbor to the east, and home to Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Box Elder sits just east of Rapid City along I-90, and it grew up around Ellsworth Air Force Base. The South Dakota Air and Space Museum is outside the base's main gate, with bombers and fighters parked out on the grass where you can walk right up to them. It's a handy place to stay if you want to be close to Rapid City without being in the middle of it.
About 15 minutes from Rapid City by car.
