About
About this guide
A visitor guide to the Black Hills, Badlands and Devils Tower, built around independent businesses.
Who publishes it
Rapid City Tourism is published by My XO Adventures, a family-run tour company based in Rapid City, South Dakota.
We are not a tourism board or a chamber of commerce, and we are not pretending to be. We are a small tour company that spends every day driving people around this region, and this guide is the answer to the questions our guests ask us in the vehicle.
How businesses get on it
We invite them, and they say yes. Listings are free and always have been. Nobody pays for placement, and no listing is an advertisement.
We only list independently owned businesses with fifteen employees or fewer: sole proprietors, mom-and-pop shops, family-run kitchens and motels. Chains and franchises are left off, including franchises run by a local family, and so are the larger family-owned landmarks. That means several of the best-loved places in the Hills are not on here.
That is not a judgement on any of them. Plenty are excellent and we send our own guests to them. The difference is simply how easy they are to find: a well-established business is already easy to come across, and a small one often is not. This guide is built for the ones that are harder to find.
Everybody is welcome
The places on this guide welcome every visitor and treat them like neighbors. That is not a slogan, it is the standard, and it is the one thing we ask of a business beyond being small and local.
If you are ever made to feel unwelcome somewhere you found through this guide, please tell us. We will look into it, and we will take the listing down if we need to.
Our own listing
My XO Adventures appears in the tours section of the directory. We think it would be worse to hide it than to be straightforward that the publisher is also a listed business.
