Sturgis, SD
Home of the August motorcycle rally, and a small town at the foot of the Hills the rest of the year.
Sturgis is known around the world for its motorcycle rally, which started in 1938 and fills the whole region for ten days every August. The rest of the year it's a small town at the foot of the northern Hills, with the old cavalry post at Fort Meade just east of town. Bear Butte, a mountain sacred to many Plains tribes, rises out of the prairie a few miles to the northeast, and the trail to the top is open to visitors who treat it with respect.
About 30 minutes from Rapid City by car.
