Deadwood, SD

The 1876 gold rush town where Wild Bill Hickok was shot, with its old buildings still standing.

Deadwood's Main Street, paved in brick and lined with restored brick and sandstone buildings, with fall color on the hills behind.

Deadwood grew overnight in the gold rush of 1876, and Wild Bill Hickok was shot here that same summer while he sat at a poker table. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark, and since 1989 gaming has paid to keep its brick main street standing. Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are both buried up the hill at Mount Moriah Cemetery, which has one of the best views over town.

About 50 minutes from Rapid City by car.
