Hot Springs, SD

A sandstone town built around warm springs, close to the Mammoth Site and Wind Cave.

Hot Springs grew up around the warm mineral springs that still flow through town, and many of its old buildings are cut from local pink sandstone. The Mammoth Site, where more than 60 mammoths have been uncovered in an ancient sinkhole, is on the edge of town, and Wind Cave National Park is just to the north. It's one of the quieter corners of the Hills, and it rewards a slow afternoon.

About an hour from Rapid City by car.
