Custer, SD
The town next to Custer State Park and Crazy Horse.
Custer is where gold was first found in the Black Hills, on French Creek in 1874, and the discovery set off the rush that built every other town on this page. Custer State Park starts just east of town, Crazy Horse Memorial is a few miles north, and Jewel Cave is a short drive west, so a lot of the big sights are within half an hour. The Mickelson Trail runs through town too.
About 50 minutes from Rapid City by car.
